Single Band Hair Band

Today I am sharing with you a very easy tutorial for simple headbands. I made the Union Jack Version for the Olympics but have since made 3 others in various fabrics for everyday wear! They take less than half an hour to make and look very neat so what are you waiting for? Find that perfect fabric and follow along!

Thin Double Band Hair Band

I have included instructions for both types- the thin double band and the thicker single band. You can make the final band any size you want - just make sure that the width of your strip is 4 times the desired final width.

1. Cut out a strip of fabric 21" long. If you are making a double band hairband, cut two strips 2" wide. If you are making a 1" single band, cut a strip with a width of 4".

2. Iron the strip in half. Open out and fold the edges into the centre and iron. Fold back in half so all raw edges are hidden (follow the pictures)

3. Sew a seam down the open side of your strip of fabric in matching thread to seal shut.

4. Measure around your head where you want to wear your headband. Take 21 1/2" away from it and cut a piece of elastic that measures the remainder when stretched out (use your judgement here - if you like your headbands tighter adjust accordingly - the 21" is the length of the strip and I take an extra half for a snugger fit but I find these to be a bit loose if my hair is in a ponytail)

5. For Double Band - Lay elastic on top of both small strips and sew as in the diagram. Repeat on the other side
For single band - tuck elastic into the unsewn end of your strip and sew shut, repeat on the other side - this results in a neater finish (possible with thicker bands - if you band is too thin, simply sew the elastic and strip together as in picture below)
