Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Snitch Cake

So, I know I've skipped one here but we watched the first part of the Deathly Hallows on New Years eve and were already so full with sticky toffee pudding tarts that was no room for a Harry Potter related treat!

I was looking forward to re-watching the last film as in the cinema I wasn't too impressed, I mean I know it was really good but it didn't make me feel how the book had made me feel. But re-watching it I really enjoyed it! And the extra features! Made me miss it even more!

So, inspired by Harry's 17th birthday cake in Deathly Hallows, I baked a snitch cake. It was a marble cake (vanilla and chocolate orange) covered in butter cream with white chocolate wings! mmmmmmm :)

The recipe for the cake batter is adapted from my favourite standard cake mixture 

Snitch Cake (cuts into 6 slices)

100g caster sugar
100g softened butter
2 eggs , beaten
100g self-raising flour 
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp milk
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
Zest of one clementine

1. Cream the sugar and butter
2. Add the eggs, flour, baking powder and milk
3. Divide the mixture into two, add cocoa powder and clementine zest to one half
4. Grease a pudding bowl and fill with alternate spoons of each mixture to get a marbled effect
5. Bake at 170C until a skewer comes out clean (about 30 minutes in a standard pudding bowl)
6. Tip the rounded cake onto a wire rack to cool

Icing


100g butter
140g Icing Sugar
1/4 tsp Vanilla extract
Drop yellow food colouring (optional) (I could have added a bit more to get a richer yellow but butter cream is yellowy anyway so its up to you!)

1. Whizz the butter in the food processor.
2. Add the icing sugar and vanilla and mix until you have a butter cream

Wings


100g White chocolate

1. Melt the chocolate
2. Place wing templates under a sheet of greaseproof paper.
3. Using a knife and spoon, add the white chocolate the the paper to cover the wings
4. Leave in the fridge to set

Assemble!



1. Cover the cake with butter cream, smoothing the edges and adding detail with a fork
2. Cut a two slits in the cake (one either side) and wedge the wings in
3. ENJOY!
